BUTALCO GmbH

BUTALCO is a start-up company founded in August 2007 with its headquarters in the Swiss cantone Zug. Founders are the biologist Professor Dr. Eckhard Boles, professor at the Institute of Molecular Biosciences at the Goethe University Frankfurt/Germany, and the chemist and economist Dr. Gunter Festel, founder of the Swiss advisory and investment firm FESTEL CAPITAL. BUTALCO is currently developing a new process to use C5/C6 sugars for bio- ethanol and biobutanol fermentation. Furthermore, BUTALCO is working together with partners to develop an integrated lignocellulose-based bioethanol/biobutanol production process. The development covers the whole process chain including all production steps from lignocellulose hydrolysis to downstream processing. The first patent applications have been filed and the aim is to licence this technology to biofuel producers. The company is wholly privately financed and is currently looking for additional investors to strengthen the research activities and to identify new attractive fields.

Jatropha oil is used for the production of high quality biodiesel - an important renewable energy fuel quickly gaining commercial acceptance worldwide. The Jatropha plant requires less water and fertilizer than conventional crops, and can be grown on desert and other lands not suitable for the production of food crops.
